Why can Cosmoose not turn on Instagram message access for me?

Instagram deliberately puts this switch out of reach of every app. There is no API call that can read it or change it, at Cosmoose or anywhere else. The account owner has to flip it in the Instagram app, which is the point of it.

My Instagram settings do not have Message controls. Where is the toggle?

Instagram has moved this setting more than once and the labels differ by app version. The heading you are looking for is Connected tools. Searching your Instagram settings for the word connected finds it whatever your version calls the screen around it.

Does turning this on let Cosmoose read my personal messages?

It applies to the professional account you connect. Cosmoose reads the messages and comments on that account into your inbox so you can answer them in one place, and it sends only the replies you send. Turning the toggle back off cuts the access off immediately, including ours.

Connecting Instagram

Instagram connects with a button, the same as most things. There is one switch you have to flip yourself first, inside the Instagram app, and until you do it your Cosmoose inbox will sit there empty and look broken.

It is not broken. Instagram is holding your messages back on purpose, and it will not hand them to any app until you say so.

What you need: the Instagram app on your phone, and a professional account. Business or creator, either is fine. That is the whole list.

1. Turn on message access

The switch is called Allow access to messages and it lives under a heading called Connected tools.

Instagram has moved that screen more than once, and which route works depends on the version of the app on your phone. So the fastest way in is not a route at all.

Open Settings and search. Profile, menu icon in the top right, Settings and privacy. There is a search box at the top. Type connected and tap the result.

If your version has no search box, one of these three gets you there. Try them in order.

Switch it on. There is nothing to save and nothing to confirm.

Worth knowing before you go looking: on some accounts it is already on, and on others it is off and has always been off. Both are normal. Check it either way, because an inbox that stays empty for a week is a worse afternoon than a ten second look.

2. Connect Instagram in Cosmoose

Open Settings in Cosmoose, then the Accounts tab, and press Connect Instagram. Instagram shows you its own screen listing what you are agreeing to, you press Allow, and you land back in Cosmoose connected.

Your comments and messages appear on the next pull. If you want them immediately, press Pull on the Instagram row.

3. Why we cannot do this part for you

Every tool that touches Instagram messages hits this same switch. Not one of them can flip it, ours included, and that is deliberate on Instagram's part. Meta's own setup instructions say the account owner has to turn it on, and they say it to every developer who asks.

So the honest version is this: we can tell you where it is, and you have to go and do it. Any tool that claims it can do this part for you is describing a thing that does not exist.

4. The inbox is still empty

Work down this list. It is in order of how often each one turns out to be the answer.

The account is personal, not professional. Instagram gives message access to business and creator accounts only. Settings, Account type and tools, Switch to professional account. It is free and it takes a minute.
You flipped the switch on a different account. If you run more than one Instagram account from the same phone, the setting belongs to whichever one you were standing in. Check the handle at the top of the settings screen matches the one you connected.
Nobody has messaged you. Less of a joke than it sounds. An empty inbox on a quiet account is the correct answer, and the Comments tab will tell you in a second whether the connection itself is alive.
The switch went back off. It can be reset by an account change, a hand off between people, or Instagram itself. If messages stop arriving after a stretch of working, look here first.

5. Turning it off

Two ways, and the second one is the one that matters.

In Cosmoose: Settings, Accounts, Disconnect. We drop the connection and the token with it.
In Instagram: the same Connected tools switch, turned back off. Access stops that moment, for us and for every other tool you have ever connected.

You never have to trust that we honoured the first one. That is the whole reason the second one exists.

6. What Cosmoose does with the access

Reads the comments and messages on your account into your inbox, and sends the replies you write. Nothing else. It does not follow accounts for you, it does not like anything on your behalf, and it never posts anything you did not write.

7. Still stuck
